How much Does an ADHD Assessment cost in Australia?
Hi! I’m Allen an autistic, ADHD guy based in Sydney, NSW who has spent years researching ADHD assessment processes and costs. That’s why I started this website, to help Australians seeking diagnosis easily find the costs of ADHD assessments in Australia in one place.
Quick! I just need to know how much!
ADHD assessments in Australia can range anywhere from around $500 to $2,500+.
While this variation in cost is based on factors discussed below, a lot of it is due to providers jacking up prices to capitalise on an explosion of demand for ADHD assessments.
Some individuals need 1 session while others may need multiple to be diagnosed with ADHD. The number and length of sessions also varies depending on the provider, with many online clinics operating on a fixed price model that only requires one assessment session.
Complex presentations, co-occurring conditions and high masking adults may require additional sessions. On the other hand those seeking comprehensive written reports and cognitive testing , also require additional sessions, increasing the cost of assessment.
ADHD Assessment Costs by State / Territory (2025)
Here’s a breakdown of what ADHD assessments done by a psychiatrist cost in each state / territory of Australia. Click on the linked location page for a full comparison of costs by provider.
The most expensive service I could find was Psych Unitied, which charged $1250
South Australia (SA)
– There is limited publicly-published, up-to-date, state-specific ADHD-only assessment fee data for SA from major clinics. Many people in SA will likely use private psychologists or psychiatrists, paying similar rates to psychologists in other states (e.g., $1,000+ for full assessments).
Western Australia (WA)
– Assuming similar private assessment structure, full ADHD assessment could land in the $1,000+ range, especially for multi-session + testing models. – For psychiatrists: private psychiatric assessments in WA will likely follow pricing broadly similar to other major cities, but check local WA psychiatrists or psychologists for specific quotes.
Tasmania (TAS)
– Very limited publicly available, recent, ADHD-assessment-specific cost data for private clinics in Tasmania. – Many Tasmanians may use telehealth services or interstate providers, so their cost will closely match national private telehealth assessment rates (e.g., similar to Kantoko or large psychology clinics). – As a rough working estimate: a full private ADHD assessment via telehealth or local psychologist might cost $1,000–2,000+, depending on complexity.
Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
– Likely to mirror pricing in NSW / Victoria for private psychologists or psychiatrists performing ADHD assessments. – For telehealth or private provider-based assessments, expect many of the same cost structures as the larger urban states (i.e., $800–2,000+, depending on the model).
Northern Territory (NT)
– Given limited local specialist availability, many in the NT may rely on telehealth for ADHD assessments. – Based on national telehealth-assessment-provider models, a full ADHD assessment via remote psychologist or psychiatrist could cost $1,000–2,000+, though this is a rough estimate.
How do Medicare rebates work?
Psychologist Assessments
Note that ADHD assessments conducted by a psychologist are not eligible for any medicare rebates.
Item 291
Medicare Rebate: 85% of service fee up to $455.60
Out-of-pocket cost: The difference between the clinic’s private fee and the up to $455.60 rebate. Typically you’ll be paying $500-1000 after the rebate.
Many clinics use Item 291 as the rebateable item for initial diagnostic ADHD assessments done by a psychiatrist.
Why the Costs of ADHD Assessment in Australia Vary So Much
Several key factors influence the total price:
1. ADHD Clinics jacking up prices
Over the past few years, demand for ADHD assessments has surged dramatically. Greater public awareness means more people are turning to professionals for answers. With a limited number of medical professionals that offer ADHD assessments, some clinics have inflated prices to significant levels
2. The Type of Clinician
Clinical psychologists often provide comprehensive assessments with detailed written reports. The more comprehensive the report and testing, the higher the cost.
Psychiatrists and paediatricians can diagnose and prescribe medication, but generally don’t conduct conduct cognitive or in depth behavioural tests. However from a cost perspective if you need or may need medication this is the best option to start with.
3. The Depth of the Assessment
Some services offer shorter sessions designed for initial exploration, while full diagnostic assessments require more time, more tools, and often more than one appointment. If you need documentation for school, university, workplace accommodations, or government support, a more thorough (and therefore more expensive) evaluation is usually required.
4. The Number of Appointments
More complex presentations often require multiple sessions, which increases cost.
Below is a guide to common price ranges:
Appointment Type
Estimated Cost (AUD)
Initial ADHD screening
$200 – $600
Full ADHD diagnostic assessment (via psychologist or psychiatrist)
$500– $2500+
Psychologist consultation*
$180 – $300+ per session
Psychiatrist or paediatrician consultation*
$300 – $1200+ per session
*Multiples sessions may be needed
What about online ADHD Assessments?
Over recent years, online services have reshaped the costs of ADHD assessment in Australia, often offer cheaper pricing and shorter wait times. These assessments typically include digital forms, video consultations, and written reports that can be sent to your GP to continue prescribing medication.
Costs for online adhd assessment tend to be lower, but it’s important to shop around as some online clinics charge even more than in person services.
Also, many online ADHD clinics have popped up in recently with the sole purpose of conducting as many ADHD assessments as possible, without any follow up care.
That’s why it’s important to consider your current and future needs when choosing online only services.
Are ADHD Assessment Costs Worth It?
For many people, the investment pays for itself over time. A diagnosis can bring direction, understanding, and access to practical supports that simply weren’t available before.
For children, it can mean tailored learning support, reduced behavioural misunderstandings, and improved communication at home. For adults, the process can clarify lifelong struggles and open the door to workplace accommodations, coaching, therapy, or medication.
In short: Yes!
